Pepsi Redesign
Pespi has decided to change the product's design, packaging, merchandising, and 'how they connect with consumers.' This change will cost them about $1.2 billion during a span of about 3 years. Here is an example of their new redesigned logo, where the popular white band will represent different smiles.
"A "smile" will characterize brand Pepsi, while a "grin" is used for Diet Pepsi and a "laugh" is used for Pepsi Max." Love it or leave it?

Criticism: Myths and Childishness
This essay by Andy Rutledge, Criticism: Myths and Childishness is definitely worth a read for every designer. Witty, To the point, as well as humorous.
"Excuses don’t cut it. Only excellent design does.
It’s not about the designer or the agency or the company who owns the site. Design criticism is about the results. Period ... I ’ve got news for you: design criticism has nothing to do with you, you childish egotist. It’s about the design. Sorry to burst your bubble."

Random got beautiful

A good idea, by designer Nikki Farquharson.
" The idea is to take objects of various colours out of their original context and place them together to create a new one."

I always enjoy looking at the creative process of projects. Thumbnails, inspiration, etc are always inspiring. Here are some examples from Jason Munn of Design Firm, Small Stakes.
Nasa finds Water in Mars

"This is the first time martian water has been tasted and tested."
-William Boynton, mission scientist
Nasa has discovered water on planet, Mars by the Phoenix space craft which landed on May 25. The water was found by melting the icy soil. This will lead to further experiments on whether life on Mars ever existed, or could possibly exist.

Happy August.

Wow, it is almost near the end of summer and August is finally year, my favorite summer month. So let me share my excitement with you, along with some facts about the ninth month (courtesy of wikipedia).
-originally named Sextilis, because it was originally the sixth month in roman calendar
-It became the eighth month either when January and February were added to the beginning of the year
-renamed August in honor of Augustus
-August originally had 29 days, but Augustus took two days from February and gave it to August when Sextilis was renamed in his honor

enjoy your august. :]

Replate

Designers Axel Albin and Josh Kamler have carried on the concept of replating your food - to place unwanted leftovers typically on a doggie bag, on top of the nearest trashcan so it doesn'y go to waste.
We started this project because we noticed that people in West Coast cities and beyond were leaving their leftovers on top of (or next to) garbage cans when they couldn't find someone to give them to. We thought this behavior was worth talking about, so we gave it a name. What is your opinion about this? Would you take part, and be an activist?

Jamie Wieck
It's is always great when you see product design, with a good and constructive concept behind it. With that said, I really enjoy these shopping bags from Jamie Wieck's Portfolio, where the bag literally holds his things.

Check out these business cards, also from Wieck, with the idea that "that a prospective client would want to keep on their table rather than in their pocket."

This is Sand
"The digital sandbox on thisissand.com takes after the physical one. The user is allowed to do what he or she wishes with the elements in the sandbox. Sometimes the resulting pieces are expressive, sometimes they become more abstract. And just as a real world sandbox, the one on thisissand.com can be smoothed out and re-sculpted again time after time."Here is my masterpiece! Try yours here! Thisissand.com
