wedding bands

For those of you out there in a relationship, ready to commit, and ready to screw yourself.... (haha get it 'screw' yourself?.............. ok. yeah, i suck at jokes, and maybe the bitterness bug is releasing itself, especially with the pink and red holiday approaching the corner.)
but its all good, in the neighborhood. check these out by Kiley Granberg.

handwriting analysis personality test

what does your handwriting say about you? take this test and find out! (taking in consideration, that your handwriting will be determined by the mouse, and not a pen/pencil. Though, my handwriting/signature turned out being very similar to the actual thing on paper.)

sounds good to me.

ruth gwily

i love the straight forwardness and sincerity of Gwily's illustrations.
art is made initially by the artist for him/herself. "institutionalizing" it is as painful and traumatic as it is rewarding. you are no longer doing this on your own terms, and you expose yourself to criticism. i call this piece "nose job" because it is something you do for yourelf, yet it is also a sacrifice in order to become part of a group.

black mirror

the arcade fire's Black Mirror now has its own site (possibly as amazing as Neon Bible). The song is accompanied by a video created by Olivier Groulx & Tracy Maurice (the same folks who did the artwork for their Funeral album.) In the Black Mirror site, the viewer is able to turn of channels of the song, creating their own individual version/mix. check it out!

MBC News

MBC news in south korea's news anchor, Moon Ji-ae has been 'replaced' after much pressure from MBC's viewers. Apparently, the headlining news that day was a warehouse blast in which 40 were killed in Icheon. Moon Ji-ae was criticized by the public viewers by her 'giggle' that you can hardly hear at the end of the newscast, which deemed unapropriate behavior considering the seriousness of the news that day.

video showing Moon Ji-ae's 'chuckle/giggle' at the end of the news. [the clip repeats itself.]

hotel fox :

located in Copenhagen, Hotel Fox is not your typical and ordinary hotel. not one room is the same. each room in this hotel is an individual piece of art. many artists gathered and added their touch to these rooms. they have chosen and designed everything that goes in their room.

"From wacky comical styles to strict graphic design. From fantastic street art and Japanese Manga to simply spaced out fantasies..."

here are few examples:

room 212- Japanese Garden. artist: Simone Legno

room 312- Yume (dream in Japanese). artist: Shinya Chisato

room 217- King's Forest. artist: Birgit Amadori

i dont think i'd be able to sleep in any of these room because i would find myself too busy admiring all the work put in them :] for more info, visit Hotel Fox.

i saw this article in the news this morning and decided to share.
Robert Fidler, a farmer builds a castle and manages to hide it.

"Over the course of two years, he managed to secretly – and unlawfully – build the imposing mock Tudor structure in one of his fields, shielded behind a 40ft stack of hay bales covered by a huge tarpaulins."

-"The family hid the house behind hay bales 40ft high for four years while it was being built - in a failed bid to avoid having to apply for planning permission"

-"An Englishman's home is his castle: The Fidlers dream home complete with ramparts and cannons"

-a peek of the inside.

*sigh
i would love to live in a castle. well- maybe. i admire the man's creativity. this reminds of the quote, "art is anything you can get away with". the castle was built illegally, but i hope they can get away with it (which probably won't happen). i just thought it was amazing how this man took something, a dream, from scratch and made it come true!

scoops!

if you all are ever in the LA/Wilshire area, i encourage you to take the time to stop by scoops, "LA's most innovative and friendly ice cream shop" located on 712 N Heliotrope, near LACC (aka The Bicycle District.) I was first introduced to Scoops by my boss, Peter who always hyped up this place, until i finally joined him on an ice cream journey. Let me just say that Scoops lived up to all its hype and more. This is pretty much the best tasting and most unique ice cream you will ever have, not to mention it is also vegan friendly. with flavors such as Heiffeweisen and Lemon, Coke-pineapple, Green Tea & Figs, brown bread (a customer fave), and lots of other new experimental flavors by Mr. Tae, whom created, owns, and works at Scoops. Tai makes each flavor daily, so you always have fresh ice cream, and a new menu. what are you waiting for?

type design

every now and then you run into pretty bad typeface design. typefaces that make you wonder, wth would i use that on? i am not sure what i would use these letters for, i would just decorate my room in posters with each beautiful and intricate design created by Bjorn Johansson.

check out his other amazing work on his webpage.

record sleeve faces

the people from yadogg asked people to send in a photo with them using a record sleeve as their face.
the results: some pretty interesting and witty images. check out the collection here.

kurt halsey

"Influenced by my hopeless romantic and super sensitive mindset, I pay far too much attention to the little things in life and in the relationship between two people. In constant need of reassurance, explanation, closure, and attention, my paintings are made." - Kurt Halsey.

people tend to relate to his paintings and drawings a lot. personally, i admire his use of line, color & his overall simplicity. check out his work and upcoming exhibitions in PA and CA here !

Cat Power_Jukebox

Being a huge Cat Power fan, I had to share that today is the release of her new CD titled, Jukebox.

"
Jukebox exposes the roots of her newfound soulfulness. At a time when genres seem discouragingly fragmented and crossovers few and far between, Jukebox is admirably diverse, straddling country, blues, R&B, folk, and showtunes..."

red, david, adriana and myself must have this shirt,
otherwise who will update this blog.. and all our other blogs.

get it at UO.

track one

if you folks ever happen to be in el paso, tx, and crave some good wings,
the go-to place has definitely got to be Track One. This place is remotely
hidden, so you pretty much have to be in the know, to actually know where
this place is. my suggestion, order your wings "double dipped", a dip of sweet
and a dip of the spicy sauce. they be da bomb! though, the wait is quite a long
one, the service is pretty awesome. a must go to when in el paso.

p.s. i should have taken the photo of the wings before i bit into some of them.
what can i say. couldnt resist.

Patience! (makes awesomeness)

I saw this and I was like damn that's awesome but I can imagine how tedious it must have been to create this. The thing about making "videos" or anything else is it takes a lot of patience. But, when you complete something the end product is always well worth it. I'm sure thats what these fellers' thought.

Little Know it All

I like browsing through Turntable Lab's collection of graphic design books and magazines. You can find some great deals on the site and get your hands on some pretty rare stuff. Don't be cheap. Buy a book once in a while. Support other designers and learn something new. Here's something to get some of you kids started.

With everybody and their blog thinking they're designers these days, I gotta speak up and say that if you don't know the fundamentals, you're not a phuking graphic designer. Nothing I hate to see like people not using smart quotes or flexxing microsoft word typography. Photoshop won't help you, son. Anyway, here's a big step toward a unified design utopia as Die Verlag Gestalten has released their version of the designers' reference book. Small and portable, this book is the ultimate designer's companion whether you are an expert or a newbie. It covers the entire gamut of the profession including design fundamentals (color, perspective, layout), typography, digital media, production (printing), marketing, law, organization, and more. Densely packed, clearly organized, and so necessary. Includes a plastic cover for durability, heavyweight paper, and a built-in bookmark. 350 pages. Recommended.

Review and Pic from TurntableLab

preventing fires

i thought this was a neat and clever idea. the folks from Animal Farm,
a creative consultancy in Cape Town came up with the idea of installing
wooden, fake fire hydrants on the trees where the 'hot' fire spots are.
one may think, what good is it? its just as useless as trying to use a real fire
hydrant to try to get rid of the fire. and that is exactly the point. the only way
to actually get rid of these fires is to
prevent them. they conveniently
posted way of preventing these fires on the wooden fire hydrants.

i do adore

if you were in francisco, you should have checked out the awesome

much much more.

be excited. be be excited!

i know this movie is old, but it continues to remain one of myall time favorites.
Darren Aronofsky did an amazing job. But even more awesome, (maybe not more,
but close) is the movie's website. It is really one of the view sites that I have
seen that actually try to play with the movie''s concepts and not just try to promote
and sell the film. everyone should check out reqiemforadream.com at least more
than once and discover the different options.

Sanna Annukka

i am sure most of us are familiar with Sanna Annukka's work.
the most apparent being from a Keane covers. But Sanna does
a bunch of other great illustrations that i felt were worth the time
to take a look at. check out her site. enjoy.

across the street...

...from the Alexander Steinweiss exhibit (see previous post), The Seventh Letter is also having an exhibit opening on Saturday, January 19th at the Robert Berman Gallery.

An exhibition featuring the work of select members of the notorious Seventh Letter (T7L) graffiti collective. Within the Seventh Letter collective is an elite crew known as Angels Will Rise (AWR), who have established themselves as L.A.’s most influential modern muralists. The show will consist of a floor-to-ceiling mural installation constructed by AWR members: Pusher, Zeser, Krush, Rime, Saber, Revok, Retna, Reyes, Skrew, Sever and Ewok.

January 19 - February 12, 2008
*Opening Reception: Saturday, January 19th, 2008
Gallery D5 --- Don't miss out on this one either!

inventor of music album art:

In 1939, 23 year old Alexander Steinweiss proposed to Columbia to make a change in the presentation and packaging of the 78 RPM record albums and to use original artwork (drawings and paintings) on the covers. This new approach was quite a change if compared to the gold or silver imprint of just the nomenclature in a serif or gothic font on the black, brown or beige heavy books. The new look skyrocketed the sales of an already very popular composition. From that day on the artistic packaging became an important part of the record.

As an addition to a show of Steinweiss's work, there will be a tribute show paying homage to his unprecedented contribution to album cover art. Steinweiss is 90 years old this year and this tribute is long overdue.
The show dates are Jan. 19th- Feb. 12th at the Robert Berman Gallery: 2525 Michigan Ave, C2, Santa Monica, CA 90404. If you are in the area, you definately don't wanna miss out!

Takashi Murakami

Murakami's exibit opened Oct. 29th at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and is due to close on Feb 11th. I'm sure you've seen his work around. Most notable is his signature character mr. DOB. If you live in japan you'd be treated to his huge exibition pieces but if you're unlucky as I am and live in the US you can see his work on skateboards, action figures and even Louis Vuitton bags. Some of you might recognize his work on Kanye West's Graduation album art.

The MOCA exibit has 5 different galleries dedicated to Murakami. If you're in LA try to stop by. It will be well worth it.
