sucks to be her.

By now, I am sure all of America is familiar with this episode of Moment of Truth, even if you've never seen the show, like myself. seriously, this can't be true. I think it is all a scam. What do you guys think?

wow.

Our good friend and blogger, Travis, shared this image of this pretty amazing sculpture. I tried to find out where it is located and who did it... can you fill us in?

Enjoy.

inside noth korea

I find it interesting how we always hear about north korea, yet because of strict border enforcements and communistic laws we are hardly, if ever allowed to see what goes on inside North Korea. Fortunately award winning photographer, Mark Edward Harris, published a book, INSIDE NORTH KOREA showcasing the photos he took (under supervision) while he was given permission to visit North Korea.

Modern Toilet

Taiwan's chain of MODERN TOILET restaurants has got me in awe. From not only the seats being made from actual toilets, the bowls are actually miniature toilet bowls, not to mention the chocolate ice cream dessert made to look like, well you know what. i wonder if they offer green tea ice cream. ha. So the next time you are in Taiwan, stop by, take your camera and 'bon appetit' if it's even possible.

deanne cheuk!

deanne cheuk is one of my favorite graphic designers/illustrators of all time. her wonderful ink and water color illustrations have been compiled into the making of her book the mushroom girls virus . aside from her drawings, cheuk has also had her hands on the graphic editorial world, in which you have probably seen her work. she has contibuted as an art director for tokion magazine, creating beautiful hand drawn titles, along with working for urban outfitters as a creative director for their print catalog. read more about deanne here!

MARYSOL FOUCAULT

LINA SCHEYNIUS

SARA A. TREMBLAY

here is another cool website in which i felt had a really cool concept. created by
Miranda Lehman & Kamden Vencill when they
" found [themselves] surrounded by artwork that seemed to be hopelessly lacking in sincerity, inspiration, and mystery. [They] felt frustrated that cleverness seemed to hold more weight than substance, and distressed that the shared experience of simply being human had become totally irrelevant. At best, the art world seemed like nothing special. At worst, art appeared to be mired in a swamp of its own making. [They] felt compelled to remind everyone (including ourselves) that art is for the the people who make it and for the people who choose to experience it--not for an ambiguous elite whose true identity remains to be known."

couldnt agree more. enjoy.

6 word motto for the US

I thought this was quite amusing, written by Stephen J. Dubner, he invites readers to create a 6 word motto for the US. some of the responses were pretty clever and amusing.
  • “America: Because We Know Better Than You.”
  • "USA, Sold to the Highest Bidder."
  • "Land of the Free (Just Kidding)”
  • “Do you want fries with that?”
  • "Affordable or not, we’ll buy it."
  • Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton? Deja Vu?
  • "America: Fixing You Before We Fix Ourselves"
  • "The U.S.A (Warning: may contain nuts)"
  • “Where freedom is a catch phrase”
  • "Not as bad as you think."
and much more, click here!

Any suggestions?

Catching the Big Fish

This past weekend i went to Barnes N' Noble for some quiet time and inspiration seeking. While I was there I was happy to run into a book by Director David Lynch,
Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity. This book had me from the beginning, reading the whole way through, on my visit. In this book, Lynch explores the idea of transcendental meditation as part of our daily lives. Through transcendental meditation, one enriches their life, becoming a happier, more peaceful and positive human being, therefore causing a rippled effect through others.

One of the passages that he stated in his book regarding L.A. ( spoke for me) is as follows: "I love Los Angeles. I know a lot of people go there and they just see a huge sprawl of sameness. But when you're there for a while. you realize each section has it's own mood. "

In the book’s first section, Lynch discusses the development of his ideas-where they come from, how he grasps them, and which ones appeal to him the most. He then shares his passion for “the doing”-whether moviemaking, painting, or other creative expressions. Lynch talks specifically about how he puts his thoughts into action and how he engages with others around him. Finally, he discusses the self and the surrounding world -and how the process of “diving within” that has so deeply affected his own work can directly benefit others.

roland young

i came across an article on cmyk magazine about the infamous roland young. all design professors should be something like that. or rather, all designer/art majors/ or pretty much any major should experience a professor like Roland.

check out Roland in action at one of the class's critiques, brought to you by one of his students, Owen.

Roland is God

writers strike

It seems as if the writers strike may be over soon since studio heads and the Writers Guild are in talks of establishing a new three-year contract, and all will resume to work on monday. Shows such as greys anatomy (woohoo) and the office will return on air in late spring, while others may have to wait until the fall.

guerilla knitting

also, if you havent caught on to the newest form of 'street art' say hello to guerilla knitting. I was introduced into this new street art by my friend, Lanie about a year ago. Actually, guerilla knitting has been going around for a couple of years now, with different 'knitting crews' or individuals who have caught on to this knitting bug and shared and left with the world a piece of their art.

check out these different sites where you can check out more photos on the knitting scene.

anyone want to start a knitting crew in el paso?

graphic design

for me, graphic design is not:

a way to get rich quick

a chance to stay poor

a sacrifice

art

an ‘artistic’ calling

sheer craftmanship that can be bought for whatever objective

a knack

work i would want to do as a team

work i can do in isolation (another paradox!)

a job

Persepolis

Been seeing a few of the clips for this movie on tv and can't wait to see. I realize many people wont be able to connect with the story but from a visual standpoint the bold animation is just up my alley. Simple pen and ink can do incredible things.
