philip kwame apagya

Today in my African Art class, we were introduced to contemporary artist's from Africa. One of the ones that caught my attention was Philip Kwame Apagya.

Apagya uses photography and to take portraits of people on his painted backdrops of commissioned painted backgrounds. These backgrounds
" [portray] everything people dream of having:
fake new england country houses
showing off some porcelain,
VCRs and TVs in bar closets,
modern kitchens with well-stocked refrigerators
with coke and cheetos...
portraits with with a quarter / half / full smile,
because nobody in africa is really deceived by make-believe...
but for one glorious moment they can have it all."

You should ask what level of economic development these paintings reflect and why Ghana with all its resources has not been able to assisst its people in fulfilling such dreams. You may perhaps then examine the effect of slavery and colonialism on the economy of Ghana. You might then realize that the economy of countries like Ghana have not always been geared at helping their ciitizens.
